Thinking: Berkeley With Me, Myself, and I.

Some random building I ate lunch outside of.
top: UO, $10 - shorts: F21, $15 - shoes: UO - bag: target - earrings: World Market, $5

Items I bought from UO, a boutique, and a street vendor.

Yesterday I took a little solo trip to a place of fond memories, Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley. When I was there I needed an opinion on a shirt I was contemplating buying and so I texted my sister a picture of it. We kept texting and when she found out I was there by myself her response was, "Are you lonely??" double question marks and all. I wasn't lonely, and had actually planned to go by myself. My plans didn't fall through with anyone else, I wasn't going to be in the area, I chose to go and spend the day with myself in a place I love. Notice that I said 'with myself' and not 'by myself'. Every once in awhile I want to spend time with just me. That doesn't mean sitting in my room on netflix eating junk food, because I do that often enough for it to be considered part of my routine. I mean going out and doing something that I would generally go do with friends with myself instead. Two years ago, I never would have done that. I would have felt extremely uncomfortable and never wanted to. But now, I think its something everyone should do on occasion. One of the girls I used to live with was talking to me about some things she was dealing with and I could really sense her need to be wanted by others, and so I asked her if she ever took a day to spend time with herself and she said no. So I suggested it to her and I think she was nervous about it. I don't think she felt super comfortable with the idea and I don't know if she's ever tried it. Its nice to spend the day within your own head formulating your own opinions and thoughts without someone else's input or stopping where you want for however long you want. I think of it as if you don't want to spend the day with yourself, why would someone else? Self-love is really important and I feel that often times the focus of self-love is on appearance. While thats also extremely necessary for a life of happiness I think self-love for your personality is equally necessary. So I challenge you to go see a movie wth yourself (its tough when you have popcorn and need use the restroom), go to a nice dinner with yourself, or go out of town with yourself. Understand while other people love to spend time with you. Until my next post, Elyse.

Thrifted Looks

Guess who got a camera charger...this girl :) Finally I will have actual blog posts up. Its about damn time. I've been on summer break for two weeks now and I just decided that I'm dedicating my summer to my blog. I haven't found a job (after literally 25 applications), I don't have my driver's license, and I live 45 minutes from every single one of my friends. So that means I'll have a lot of free time and I want to use it here. That being said, can someone tell me how to get a good theme? I'm so clueless.
If I could do anything for the rest of my life, it would be thrifting. I love searching through the racks of clothes for the gems that are just waiting to be found. Below I've styled three fully thrifted outfits (except only one pair of shoes is thrifted, its hard to find size 9.5).

THE TWO-PIECE
I like how this outfit goes along with the "two-piece" trend but since the two shades of purple are different and the kimono has a print, its a bit more wearable.
Kimono: Superior Thrift, $5
Crochet Crop Top: Savers, $4
Purple High-Waisted Shorts: Eco-Thrift, $3

BE BASIC
A lot of people go to the thrift store to find unique pieces to fit in with their wardrobe, but the thrift store is a great place to find basics for super cheap.
Grey T-shirt: Savers, $4
Green Gap Jeans: Superior Thrift, $6
Woven Loafers: Discovery Thrift, $2
Crochet Crossbody: Garage Sale, $1

MOM JEANS
Not everything you find will be in wearable condition. Alterations might need to be made, but remember that when you thrift! These jeans were straight leg and I took them in to make them skinny.
Tie-dye Crop Top: Eco-thrift, $1
High-Waisted Jeans: Random Thrift Store, $.50
Brown Cross-body: Salvation Army, $3

layers.

I don't buy really thick super warm coats because they're expensive and I don't have much use for them because I live in California where winter weather rarely goes below 45 degrees. Nonetheless, I still get really cold. So, I thought I would share my tips for layering to keep warm! Until my next post, Elyse.

  • Fitted Long Sleeve: Perfect to put on underneath a tank top, shortsleeve shirt, or even a sweater for extra warmth.
  • Flannel: good to wear like a cardigan just thrown over something. Adds a nice pattern pop!
  • Cardigan: The best thing to layer over a shirt and underneath anything. Even another cardigan.
  • Hoodie: I love layering hoodies underneath outerwear to make it more casual.
  • Outerwear: I think I have an obsession with outerwear. But great for warmth and to make an outfit look more Fall/Winter.
  • Leggings: Great for when its really cold to put underneath a pair of pants.
  • Beanie/Gloves: Good things to throw in your bag for when it gets even colder!

eco-thrift haul #2

I have not gone shopping with money in my wallet in over a month and a half. For most normal people that doesn't seem like much, or even anything to complain about. But for me, thats a very long time. I have been extremely uninspired by the clothes in my closet and I haven't actually put together an outfit I'm proud of in a long time (hence the lack of OOTD posts). Since today was my first free Saturday in the past 2 months I went to my favorite thrift store in hopes of leaving with some items that would make me excited to get dressed in the morning. Although I didn't get as much as I hoped I'm very happy with what I did get. I tried on the two skirts I bought and was trying to decide which one I should leave behind because I didn't see the point in buying two of the same skirts in different colors. Then I looked at the tag and saw American Apparel. The skirt retails at $30 a piece, so since it was only $2 I got both. Unfortunately though, I left a lot of corduroy pants behind that didn't fit me. But I did find 2 dollars in the pocket of a pair of pants I tried on! Until my next post, Elyse.

Navy Tie-dye crop top: no brand, $.99
Maroon Lace top: Testament, $2
Grey skirt: American Apparel, $2
Navy Skirt: American Apparel, $2

mental health day

Today I am taking a bit of a mental health day. The past few days I've started to get stressed out with due dates that are all falling on the same week and all the weekends before that I am out of town. Since school seems to be less and less eventful I decided to get a head start on some of those things and do some things of my own today instead. These things include a blog post (check!), cleaning my room, reading, laying out, finishing my anatomy packet, and doing some research for a project. Hopefully I will be able to accomplish all of this today. Fingers Crossed!
Now for my outfit. This is what I put on for school before I decided to stay home. This is my second outfit with these bootcut jeans. Let me know what you think! Until my next post, Elyse.

Black Tank: Target
Eddie Bauer Crochet Cardi: Eco-thrift, $4
Peace Sign Necklace: Bakers
Belt: Forever 21. $9.80
Levi Bootcut Jeans: Savers, $8
Steve Madden Hippie Sandals: DSW, $34

treasure island flea market

Today I went to the Treasure Island Flea Market with my parents. I'd never been to treasure island so I was pretty excited. We got there and it was beautiful. It has perfect views of the bay bridge, golden gate, sf skyline, and alcatraz. There was an awesome array of vintage clothing and homemade things. The flea market is held the last weekend of every month and I hope to start going religiously.
My favorite part was this booth that had a ton of books. There's just something about shelves of books that make me so happy. As I was perusing the books I heard a guy say to a girl, "Have you ever read On the Road?"When I heard this I prayed she would leave it behind. I've wanted On the Road by Jack Kerouac for about a year now and my want for it has only increased with time. After a few minutes, sure enough, she put it down and when she left I snatched it up along with a few other books. All four books that i got were $12 all together. A good deal if you ask me especially since I'm incredibly excited to read all of them.
The last booth I went to before we left I found a tie-dye shirt dress and red (looks pink on camera) maxi skirt which were $5 each and he threw in a free tote bag along with it. There was so much cool stuff there and this huge statue of a lady dancing upon first entering. It was really cool. If you've never been to a flea market I definitely suggest going. A lot of interesting things and people are there and its just fun to immerse yourself in all of it. Until my next post, Elyse.

some of my favorite looks.

The following are some of my favorite looks that I've created on polyvore.com. For those of you who don't know, it's a site where you can create outfits from an endless amount of options of clothes, shoes, and accessories. I've been using it for awhile now and I decided to do a post of some of my outfits that I've made. Anyways, I hope something inspires you! Until my next post, Elyse.
